Valley of the Temples: A Glimpse into Ancient Greece Guide

Step back in time and explore the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture. Located in Agrigento, Sicily, this archaeological park boasts remarkably well-preserved Doric temples dating back to the 5th century BC. Prepare to be awestruck by the grandeur and historical significance of these ancient structures, which offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives and beliefs of the ancient Greeks. The Valley of the Temples was once part of Akragas, one of the most important Greek colonies in Sicily. Founded in the 6th century BC, Akragas flourished for centuries, becoming a center of art, culture, and commerce. The temples were built during this period of prosperity, dedicated to various Greek gods and goddesses. Over time, Akragas fell under Roman rule and eventually declined. The temples were abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair, but many have been restored and preserved, allowing visitors to appreciate their original splendor. A visit to the Valley of the Temples offers a range of activities. Explore the magnificent temples, including the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world, and the Temple of Hera Lacinia. Wander through the archaeological park, admiring the ancient ruins and learning about the history of Akragas. Consider visiting the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento to see artifacts discovered at the site. In the evening, the temples are illuminated, creating a magical and unforgettable experience. While in Agrigento, be sure to try local Sicilian specialties like arancini (rice balls) and pasta alla Norma.
